Since 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company has been building high quality powersports machines for both land and marine use. Their engines are powerful and reliable, reflecting decades of innovation and perfecting of manufacturing techniques.
Triangle Cycles is a proud Yamaha dealer located in Danville, Virginia, and we thought that our customers might be curious to know more of the history of this illustrious manufacturer, so we’ve decided to share with you what we know.
The Yamaha Corporation itself was established in 1887 by Torakusu Yamaha in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The company has its roots in musical instrument manufacturing, producing pianos and organs. This legacy is reflected in the company logo, a circle of three interlocked tuning forks, which are tools used to tune pianos.
In 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company was spun off from the larger corporation and became rapidly successful with its two-stroke engine motorcycles. Four-stroke engines came about in 1968 with even more popular designs rolling off assembly lines on a regular basis.
After decades as a motorcycle manufacturer, the Yamaha Motor Company sought to enter both the all-terrain vehicle market and the previously-underserved personal watercraft market. The creation of the WaveRunner 500 in 1986 was a game changer as far as marine powersports went, and Yamaha quickly became a leading contender in this market while still holding sway over the various markets for motorized land vehicles.
The company continues to lead the way when it comes to designing and producing motorized vehicles. Their motorcycles and ATVs are commonly used in popular races, while other models have seen many iterations and improvements in the past few decades.
